The CPJE exam explained: format, test dates, fees and pass rates

Last checked October 19, 2026 · Sources: PSI CPJE candidate bulletin (format, test dates, content outline effective June 1, 2022); California State Board of Pharmacy fee schedule, examination application, retake application, passing score explainer and April-September 2025 statistics.

The CPJE exam, the California Practice Standards and Jurisprudence Examination, is California’s own pharmacist exam, required alongside the NAPLEX; the MPJE doesn’t count. It has 90 questions, 75 of them scored, in two hours at PSI test centers on set dates (the last two in 2026 are November 13 and December 3), and you need a scaled score of 75 to pass. The Board’s application fee is $260 plus a $36.91 PSI fee. Only about 56% of candidates (56.4%) passed in the Board’s latest report.

From the PSI candidate bulletin and the Board’s passing score explainer, checked October 19, 2026.

Two-thirds of the scored questions are clinical and operational rather than pure law, which is why candidates who study only California law often fail. Our format and scoring guide explains the scaled score.

2026 CPJE test dates

Unlike most licensing exams, the CPJE runs only on dates the Board approves. PSI’s bulletin lists these for 2026: February 2, March 3, April 4, May 13, June 11, July 9, July 28, August 6, August 24, September 26, October 13, November 13 and December 3. Your eligibility lasts one year from the Board’s approval, so plan around these dates.

How to get licensed in California

1
Meet the education requirement

Graduate from an ACPE-accredited pharmacy program (or hold FPGEC certification). Graduates since January 1, 2016 are deemed to have met the practice-experience requirement.

2
Apply to the Board

Submit the Board's pharmacist examination application with the $260 fee, a passport photo and fingerprints (Live Scan in California, or $49 cards from out of state).

3
Pass both exams

Pass the NAPLEX through NABP, and book the CPJE with PSI on an approved date within your one-year eligibility. Each application allows one attempt.

4
Get your license

The Board mails your initial license application once both exams are passed; the initial license fee is $195.

Study strategy and tips

  • Study clinical practice and operations, not just law: they’re 52 of the 75 scored questions.
  • Use the Board’s own references: the PSI bulletin points to California Pharmacy Law, the Board’s newsletter The Script, its Health Notes monographs and the pharmacy self-assessment forms.
  • Answer every question: there’s no guessing penalty, and you can’t go back.
  • Check your IDs now: you need two unexpired IDs whose names match the Board’s record letter for letter, or you’ll be turned away and pay PSI again.

Where candidates talk about the CPJE

Pharmacy students and new graduates compare CPJE experiences on Reddit and Quora. Fees changed on January 1, 2025 and pass rates swing from report to report, so check figures against the Board. Common questions about the CPJE

Can I use the MPJE instead?

No. California requires the CPJE and doesn’t accept the MPJE in its place.

What score do I need to pass the CPJE?

A scaled score of 75 on a 0-99 scale. The Board says this isn’t 75% of questions correct; the raw passing score varies by form and is converted to 75.

When can I take the CPJE?

Only on Board-approved dates. The remaining 2026 dates in PSI’s bulletin are November 13 and December 3.

How much does the CPJE cost?

$260 for the Board’s application, plus $36.91 to PSI when you register. A retake needs another $260 application.

How soon can I retake the CPJE?

At least 45 days after a failed attempt, with a new retake application and fee, according to the Board and PSI.
