CPJE study plan: six weeks built on the Board’s content outline
Last checked October 19, 2026 · Sources: PSI CPJE candidate bulletin (content outline, Board references, test dates); California State Board of Pharmacy CPJE statistics. The weekly schedule is our suggestion.
A good CPJE study plan gives clinical practice and pharmacy operations as much time as California law, because together they’re 52 of the 75 scored questions in the Board’s content outline. Most candidates take the CPJE soon after the NAPLEX, so the plan below assumes your clinical base is fresh and spends about six weeks on California-specific law and practice. The schedule is our suggestion; adjust it to your strengths and to the Board’s set test dates.
A six-week CPJE study plan (our suggestion)
Download PSI's bulletin, read the content outline and do the 22 sample questions untimed. Book a test date: the remaining 2026 dates are November 13 and December 3.
Prescription requirements, controlled substances, dispensing, labeling, compounding and immunizations under California law (23 scored questions).
California pharmacist-provided therapies, counseling requirements, monitoring and therapy decisions (27 scored questions). Use the Board's Health Notes and your NAPLEX clinical review.
Records, inventory, drug shortages, quality assurance, supervision and CURES (25 scored questions). Work through the Board's self-assessment forms.
Take a timed 75-question practice exam in 2 hours, without going back, and review every miss by area. Then rest before test day.
What to study with
Start with the Board’s own references, which PSI’s bulletin names: California Pharmacy Law, The Script, Health Notes and the self-assessment forms. For a course, PassNaplexNow’s CPJE Law Review is $225, and UWorld RxPrep’s CPJE course has 350+ questions and a 75-item practice exam that matches the scored count. 6 hours of lectures, 101-page booklet, ~200 questions.

Repeat takers from California schools passed at about 35% in the Board’s latest report, against 64.5% for first-timers. If you failed, your score report shows how you did in each of the three areas; rebuild the plan around your weakest, add a different resource rather than repeating the same one, and use the 45-day wait to cover clinical practice and operations properly.
Tips that make the plan work
- Practice without going back: the real exam won’t let you return to questions.
- Answer everything: there’s no guessing penalty.
- Don’t study law alone: clinical and operations questions are two-thirds of the score.
- Check your IDs early: a name mismatch on test day means no exam and another PSI fee.
Common questions about CPJE study plans
How long should I study for the CPJE?
Many candidates plan about four to eight weeks after the NAPLEX; our six-week plan is a suggestion to adjust to your strengths.
What's the biggest CPJE area?
Clinical practice, at 27 of 75 scored questions, then pharmacy operations at 25 and patient information and prescription evaluation at 23.
Does NAPLEX prep help with the CPJE?
Often, but not on its own: the CPJE tests California-specific practice and law the NAPLEX doesn’t cover.
Are there official practice questions?
Yes. PSI’s bulletin has 22 sample questions with an answer key.
