CPJE exam day and results: PSI’s ID rules, what you can bring and when scores arrive

Last checked October 19, 2026 · Source: PSI CPJE candidate bulletin (December 2024 edition), plus the California State Board of Pharmacy’s retake application.

On CPJE exam day, arrive at a PSI test center at least 30 minutes early with two unexpired IDs, one with a photo, whose names match the Board’s record letter for letter. You’ll be thumbprinted, get a 15-minute tutorial that doesn’t count against your two hours, and answer 90 questions one at a time with no going back. You leave with a completion receipt, not a score: the Board mails your result about 30 days later.

ID rules: the strictest part of CPJE day

PSI requires two unexpired IDs of different types, one with a photo, and both must match your name on the Board’s record exactly, letter for letter, including middle name versus initial and suffixes like Jr. PSI’s own example: Pamela Sue Smith is not the same as Pamela S. Smith. Photocopies, temporary IDs and expired IDs aren’t accepted. If your IDs don’t match, you won’t test, PSI treats it as a missed appointment, and you pay another $36.91.

ID type Note
US state, commonwealth or territory driver’s license or ID card Only one of these
US passport book or card Only one of these
US Social Security card Can’t be laminated
US military ID
National identity card English only

Acceptable IDs listed in PSI’s CPJE bulletin. Bring two different types; at least one must have a photo.

What you can and can’t bring

  • Almost nothing: no phones, watches, calculators, notes, pens, food, drinks, gum, bags, hats or outerwear in the testing room.
  • Layers you wear in: light sweaters without pockets or hoods are allowed if worn at check-in; taking one off means storing it in the lobby while your time runs.
  • Medication: only what’s medically necessary, in a labeled prescription container, subject to inspection.
  • Check-in: you’ll empty your pockets and be thumbprinted, and the thumbprint is checked again after any break.

During the exam

  • One question at a time, no going back: you can’t return to change or review answers.
  • 15 hidden pretest questions: unscored and not identified, so treat every question as real.
  • No guessing penalty: answer everything.
  • Breaks use your time: one candidate at a time, signed out and in; breaks over five minutes are reported to the Board.

Results

When you finish, PSI gives you a Candidate Notice of Examination Completion with your name, photo, date and location, as a receipt. The Board mails your score about 30 days later and won’t give results by phone; it may delay results while it runs quality checks. If you pass and are otherwise eligible, the letter tells you to pay the $195 initial license fee. If you fail, you get a report on your performance in each of the three content areas, and you can retake after 45 days with a new application.

Remaining 2026 dates

The CPJE runs only on Board-approved dates. The last two in PSI’s 2026 schedule are November 13 and December 3, with centers open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Cancel at least two days ahead if your plans change, or you forfeit the $36.91. See how to register.
