CPA exam day: what to expect
CPA exam day means four hours, two standardized breaks, and a check-in process designed around the assumption that everyone is cheating. Knowing the sequence removes most of the anxiety.
What to bring on CPA exam day
One government-issued photo ID, one secondary with your signature. Names must match your NTS exactly, with no expired documents.
Printed or on your phone. You need the launch code on it, and centers have been known to ask for the physical copy.
No phone, no watch, no water bottle at the desk. Everything goes in a locker, and lockers are small.
Test centers run cold and you cannot add a jacket mid-exam without re-screening. Wear the layers in.
The timeline on the day
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| T minus 30 min | Arrive. Late arrivals past 30 minutes are turned away and forfeit the fee |
| Check-in | ID verified, palm vein scan, pockets emptied and turned out |
| Tutorial | Five minutes of interface walkthrough. Skip it only if you have practiced in exam mode |
| Testlets 1 and 2 | Multiple choice. You cannot return to a testlet once submitted |
| Standardized break | Fifteen minutes that does not count against your exam time. Take it |
| Testlets 3 to 5 | Task-based simulations, where most of the marks are |
| Submit | Survey, then out. Scores arrive on the published release date, not today |
Six things worth knowing
Only the standardized break pauses the clock. Any other break runs your exam time down.
Laminated sheets and a marker. Ask for a replacement before you run out, not after.
Practice with it. Reaching for a physical calculator you cannot use wastes seconds you need.
Palm scan and pocket check each time you re-enter. Budget two minutes of your fifteen for it.
Flags do not carry between testlets. Use them within a testlet and clear them before you submit.
Testlet two feeling hard often means you did well in testlet one. Candidates talk themselves out of passing scores this way.
Common questions
What happens if I arrive late?
Under thirty minutes late and you are usually still admitted at the center’s discretion. Past thirty minutes you are turned away, the fee is forfeited and you reschedule from scratch.
Can I take a break whenever I want?
Yes, but only the standardized break pauses the clock. Any other break runs your exam time down while you are out of the room, and you are re-screened on the way back in.
What if the software crashes?
Raise your hand and do not touch anything. Center staff log the incident and your responses are saved; if time is lost, the incident report is how you get it back, so make sure one is filed before you leave.
What if I need to move my CPA exam day?
Through Prometric, and the earlier you move it the less it costs. Our CPA exam dates and scheduling page covers the notice periods, and scores arrive on the dates in our score release schedule.
