CPA exam changes to know about

CPA exam changes are happening on three fronts at once: the blueprints, the credit window and the 150-hour licensure rule. Here is what has already changed, what is landing next, and what it means if you are mid-study.

For the background to the biggest change, read CPA Evolution explained; for the licensure reforms, see CPA requirements by state. The July 2027 platform change is from the AICPA’s score release page, checked October 13, 2026.

What it means if you are mid-study

Check your materials

Any course bought before 2025 is teaching a superseded blueprint. Every provider updates free within the access period — confirm yours has.

Recheck your credit window

If your state adopted the 30-month rule after you passed your first section, you may have more time than you think. Ask your board in writing.

Do not switch discipline late

Changing your fourth section after you have started studying costs weeks. The pass-rate gap is not worth it.

Watch your state, not the news

Licensure reform is state by state. National coverage routinely reports a change as done when one legislature has passed one bill.

Common questions

How do I know my course covers the current blueprint?

Every major provider updates free within your access period. Check the blueprint version in your dashboard — if it predates 2025, contact support rather than assuming.

Did my credit window really get longer?

In most states, yes — from 18 to 30 months — and some boards applied it retroactively to credits that had not yet lapsed. Ask your board in writing; do not rely on forum posts.

What is changing next?

A scheduled blueprint refresh in January 2027, plus further state-level licensure reform. Neither should change how you study today.

What changes in July 2027?

From July 2027 the CPA Exam moves to a new technology delivery platform with interface changes, and the AICPA has published an adjusted, less frequent score release schedule for both Core and Discipline sections. Our score release dates page tracks the current schedule.
