CPA Evolution, explained
CPA Evolution changed the exam in January 2024: it stopped being four fixed sections and became three core sections plus a discipline of your choice. If you are studying from anything published before 2024, it is describing an exam that no longer exists.
What CPA Evolution actually changed
The old exam tested every candidate on the same four papers. CPA Evolution kept three of those as a common core — accounting, audit and tax — and replaced the fourth with a choice between three disciplines, on the reasoning that the profession had grown too broad for one syllabus. The AICPA’s overview of the new CPA exam covers the official detail.
| Before 2024 | Since 2024 | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| AUD, BEC, FAR, REG | AUD, FAR, REG plus one discipline | You choose your fourth section |
| BEC covered everything else | BAR, ISC or TCP | Pick the one matching your strengths |
| Same exam for everyone | Same license, different fourth paper | The discipline does not restrict your career |
| 18-month credit window | 30-month window in most states | Ten more months to finish |
Choosing your discipline
This is the only genuinely new decision the redesign created, and candidates overthink it. The discipline appears nowhere on your license and employers do not ask. Pick the one you will pass, then plan where it fits using our guide to the best order to take CPA sections.
Business analysis and reporting. The hardest by pass rate, and the natural choice if you are strong on financial reporting and modeling.
Information systems and controls. Generous to anyone with IT audit or systems exposure, and the second easiest of the three.
Tax compliance and planning. The highest pass rate, largely because the people taking it already work in tax.
Why the pass rates moved
Discipline pass rates are still settling. The first cohorts self-selected heavily — tax professionals took TCP, systems people took ISC — which is why those numbers look flattering, while BAR absorbed everyone who did not have a specialism and reads harder than it is.
Treat any pass rate published before mid-2025 as provisional. The three-year trend on our pass rates page is the honest picture.
Common questions
Does my discipline appear on my license?
No. The license is identical whichever discipline you pass, and employers do not ask. Pick the one you are most likely to pass.
Can I switch discipline after I start studying?
Yes, until you register for it, but it costs weeks of study. The pass-rate gap between disciplines is not a good enough reason to switch late.
Are my pre-2024 materials still usable?
For the three core sections, partly. For anything covering the old BEC section, no. Every provider updates free within your access period — confirm yours has.
When can I take my discipline section?
Discipline sections are offered only in the first month of each quarter, unlike the Core sections. See our score release dates for the current windows and our CPA exam day guide for what happens on the day.
