PMP exam day: test center or online
The PMP is 180 questions in four hours, with two 10-minute breaks, and you can take it at a Pearson VUE test center or online with a proctor. PMI recommends the test center. Rules vary by provider, so check Pearson VUE’s current requirements the week before.
Test center or online?
| Pearson VUE test center | Online with a proctor | |
|---|---|---|
| PMI’s view | Recommended | Available |
| What you control | Little; the center provides the setup | Your own room, computer and connection |
| Main risk | Travel and a fixed location | Technical or room-setup problems |
| Before the day | Confirm ID and the route | Run the system check and prepare the room |
The week before
- Check your ID. Your name must match your PMI application and your appointment exactly.
- Read Pearson VUE’s rules for your delivery option, including what you can bring and what you cannot.
- Do a full-length practice exam in one four-hour sitting. Stamina is part of the test.
- If testing online, run the system check on the computer you will use, and set up a clear, quiet room.
Pacing
180 questions in 240 minutes is about 80 seconds a question. Flag hard ones and move on.
Most questions describe a project situation. Read what is being asked before you read the options.
Two scheduled 10-minute breaks are built in. Use them to reset, not to review.
Common questions
Can I bring notes or my phone?
Check Pearson VUE’s current policy for your delivery option. Rules on what you can bring differ between a test center and an online sitting, and breaking them can cost you the attempt.
What if I cannot make my appointment?
Contact Pearson VUE as early as possible, and check PMI’s policy for any fees or limits. You only have a one-year window and three attempts, so protect them.
