How to apply for the DAT

Get a DENTPIN, apply and pay the $580 fee on the ADA’s DAT Program website, wait for your eligibility email, then book a date with Prometric. You have six months from approval to test, and the ADA suggests applying 60 to 90 days before the date you want.

Source: ADA, DAT 2026 Candidate Guide (updated August 4, 2026), except the 60-90 day timing and year-round availability, which are as reported by prep guides. Checked October 12, 2026.

1
Get a DENTPIN

Register or retrieve your Dental Personal Identification Number at ADA.org/DENTPIN. Use your legal name exactly as it appears on your ID.

2
Request a fee waiver or accommodations (if needed)

If you need fee help or testing accommodations, request them from your DENTPIN account first. Fee waivers take up to 10 business days, and accommodations must be approved before you book.

3
Apply and pay

Submit your application and the $580 fee on the DAT Program website. Choose every school you want scores sent to now: reports to them are free, and the list can't be changed later.

4
Wait for your eligibility email

The ADA processes applications on weekdays during business hours. After approval you're eligible to test for six months.

5
Book with Prometric

Schedule your appointment on Prometric's website. The DAT is offered year-round, subject to seat availability.

Mistakes that cost you the fee

  • A name that doesn’t match your ID exactly. You’ll be turned away and lose the fee. Corrections must be made at least two weeks before your appointment.
  • Missing your six-month window. You’ll need a new application and fee, unless you bought a one-time $150, 45-day extension.
  • Arriving more than 30 minutes late or not showing up. The full fee is forfeited.
  • Updating your DENTPIN contact details and assuming your application changes too. It doesn’t; email DENTPIN@ADA.org.

Common questions

How late can I reschedule?

At least 24 hours ahead and by the business day before, through Prometric. Fees are $50 with 30+ business days’ notice, $70 with 5-29 and $150 with 1-4.

Do my scores go to the application services?

Yes. The ADA sends scores to ADEA AADSAS if you choose any dental school, and to TMDSAS if you choose a Texas school.
