Iowa PE license requirements

Iowa lets you take the PE any time after passing the FE, without first completing four years of experience; your experience is verified when you apply for the license. You still apply to the Iowa Engineering and Land Surveying Examining Board (part of the Department of Inspections, Appeals, and Licensing), which needs documentation of a qualifying degree before approving you to sit. Applications include references, a project statement and an ethics questionnaire.

Sources: Iowa Administrative Code rule notices (ARC 5953C, decoupling under 2021 Iowa Acts HF 284) and Iowa DIAL engineering forms, checked October 11, 2026. Confirm fees with the board.
