LSAT exam day guide: what to bring and what to expect

From the August 2026 LSAT, almost everyone takes the test in person at a Prometric test center. The test takes about three hours: four 35-minute sections with a 10-minute intermission after the second. These are the rules that trip people up.

Bring

  • A physical, valid passport or government-issued photo ID (US, US territory or Canada), expired no more than three months before your test. The first and last name must exactly match your LSAC account. No photos or copies, and no US military IDs.
  • Water only, in a clear container with a lid and the label removed.
  • Nothing else you need at your desk. A locker holds your belongings, including your switched-off phone.

At the center, Prometric provides

  • Three blank scratch-paper booklets (two pages each) and two pencils. You cannot bring your own paper or pens.
  • Noise-reducing headphones. These are the only headphones you can use.

During the test

  • You cannot use your phone at any time, including during the intermission. Using it ends your test without a refund.
  • Watches and timers of any kind, smart glasses, fitness trackers and calculators are not allowed.
  • During the 10-minute intermission you can use the restroom or have a snack, but you must check back in with the proctor before testing resumes. If you don’t, your session ends without a refund.
  • You can take an unscheduled restroom break, but the clock keeps running.
  • Hats and other head coverings are not allowed unless they are a religious requirement.

After the test

  • You can share how you felt about the test in general, but not anything about a passage, question or answer. LSAC treats that as misconduct.
  • You have six calendar days to cancel your score if you want to.
  • If you have not yet done LSAT Argumentative Writing, finish it now. Your score will not be released without an approved sample.
