BarMax bar review: real MBE questions at a mid-range price
BarMax is a full app-based bar course from TestMax, priced at $1,895 for the UBE or California course, well under BARBRI and Themis. Its pitch is official material: all 1,950 licensed MBE questions, audio lectures from law professors, and 10 essay or performance-test critiques by former bar graders. A money-back pass guarantee applies only to the lifetime courses, and its conditions are strict.

What stands out
- Official MBE questions. All 1,950 released MBE questions, licensed from NCBE, rather than written imitations.
- Lower price than the big names. $1,895 for the UBE or California course, with 0% financing through Affirm from about $106 a month.
- Substantial materials. BarMax lists 50+ hours of audio lectures, 400+ practice essays, 100+ performance tests, 2,900+ flashcards and hardcopy books.
- Discounts. A public interest and military scholarship cuts the UBE or CA course to $1,248, and BarMax credits up to $250 of a deposit paid to another provider.
- Works offline. The whole course runs in its app without an internet connection.
What to watch for
- Access is limited unless you pay more. The standard course is active for two exam administrations; lifetime access is a $600 upgrade.
- The pass guarantee has strict conditions. It covers only the lifetime CA and UBE courses; you must complete the full course, send official results within two weeks, and prove you’ve enrolled in a comparable course of equal or greater value. Limited-access courses get a free retake instead.
- Less hand-holding. It’s built for self-study; live help comes as paid tutoring.
- Confirm NextGen coverage. BarMax’s course pages focus on the current UBE and California exams; if you’re sitting the NextGen bar, check it covers your exam.
- Pass-rate claims. BarMax publishes its own pass rates in its app listing; these are self-reported and older figures, so treat them with caution.
