How to apply for the bar exam
There’s no national bar application. You create an NCBE account, then apply directly to the jurisdiction where you want to be admitted, by its deadline, including character and fitness forms and fees. Separately you register for the MPRE with NCBE and Pearson VUE.
Based on NCBE and state boards, checked October 11, 2026.
1
Create an NCBE account
Your NCBE number is used for the MPRE, MBE/NextGen scores and score transfers.
2
Choose your jurisdiction
Check whether it gives the legacy UBE, NextGen UBE or its own exam on your date, and its deadlines.
3
Apply to the state
Apply to that jurisdiction's board of law examiners, with character and fitness forms; many states let students register early.
4
Register for the MPRE
$185, at Pearson VUE; no late registration.
5
Register your laptop if needed
Some jurisdictions charge to use a laptop on the written portions.
