The best free GED resources are GED.com’s own practice questions and study tools, free state-funded adult education classes, and GED study books from your public library. The official practice test that predicts your score, GED Ready, isn’t free, but at $7.99 per subject or $25.99 for all four it’s the one low-cost item worth paying for before you test.

GED Testing Service says many free study tools are available directly through GED.com, including practice questions and online resources, and that the test itself is the only cost you have to pay. Creating an account is free, and it shows your state’s rules and prices. The site also explains each subject in detail, which is the best way to see exactly what’s tested.
Free adult education classes
Most states fund adult education programs that offer GED classes in person or online. Arizona’s Department of Education, for example, points GED students to its State-Funded Adult Education Programs for classes designed to prepare them for the test. Classes are often free or low-cost and give you a teacher, structure and other learners, which helps many people stay on track. Search your state’s adult education office or ask your local community college.
Library books and essay guides
- Library study books: Arizona’s Department of Education suggests checking your local public library for GED study books. Borrowing a current edition costs nothing.
- Essay guidelines: GED Testing Service publishes free extended response guidelines explaining what a strong essay looks like, including the suggested 4 to 7 paragraphs.
- Our subject guides: free topic lists and worked examples for Math, Language Arts, Science and Social Studies.
The low-cost item worth buying: GED Ready
GED Ready, the official practice test, costs $7.99 per subject or $25.99 for all four subjects on GED.com, and GED.com says purchases expire 12 months after you buy them. It’s the only practice test GED Testing Service says predicts whether you’re likely to pass, and it’s required if you want to test online. GED.com puts the real test at about $30 to $40 per subject in most states, so a GED Ready check before each subject can save you from paying for a test you’re not ready for.
