NCLEX in New York: NYSED, state coursework and the $143 fee
New York licenses nurses through the State Education Department’s Office of the Professions, not a traditional board of nursing. You apply on Form 1, pay a $143 license-and-first-registration fee, and complete two New York-specific courses, infection control and child abuse reporting, before you can be licensed.

The two New York courses
| Course | What NYSED says | Often already done if… |
|---|---|---|
| Child abuse identification and reporting | Must be completed, or you must qualify for an exemption, before NYSED can issue an RN license or limited permit | You graduated from a NYSED-registered program, which has included it since 1990 |
| Infection control | Must be completed, or you must qualify for an exemption, to be licensed. You then repeat it every four years | You graduated from a NYSED-registered RN program within the last four years |

The limited permit
New York offers a limited permit that lets eligible graduates practice under supervision while waiting for the license. One source reports a separate $35 fee for it. The child abuse coursework must be complete before NYSED will issue a limited permit.
