NCLEX exam day: what to expect at the test center

Most candidates take the NCLEX at a Pearson VUE test center. The RN exam allows up to five hours, with optional breaks, and the most common ways to lose your fee are an ID mismatch, a missed appointment or arriving late. Check Pearson VUE’s current rules the week before.

ID and timing

  • Bring acceptable identification in the name you registered with. A mismatch between your registration and your ID can mean you are turned away.
  • Arrive early. Check-in includes identity verification and security procedures that take time.
  • A no-show forfeits your fee, and an expired ATT means starting again.

At the center

  • Personal items go in a locker. Phones, bags, notes and watches are generally not allowed in the testing room.
  • Expect identity checks such as a photo and a biometric scan.
  • Centers provide what you may use for notes, so you do not bring your own paper.
  • Optional breaks are available during the exam. The five-hour limit is reported to include them, so confirm Pearson VUE’s current rule and use breaks with that in mind.

Details of the rules, including acceptable ID, are on Pearson VUE’s NCLEX pages and can change. Treat the list above as general, and read the current policy.

Pacing

Length
Do not count questions

The exam ends on its own when the system is confident of your result, so the number of questions you answer is not under your control.

Difficulty
Difficult is normal

Hard questions mean the system thinks you are doing well. Do not read them as a sign you are failing.

Breaks
Take breaks if you need them

Optional breaks help with focus over up to five hours. Use them to reset, not to worry.

Common questions

What happens when the exam ends?

The exam ends and the screen closes. You do not get a result on screen. Official results come from your board of nursing afterwards.

What if I cannot make my appointment?

Contact Pearson VUE before your appointment. Check its policy on rescheduling and whether you will lose the exam fee.
