How to register for the NCLEX
Registering for the NCLEX involves two organizations: your state board of nursing, which decides you are eligible and licenses you, and Pearson VUE, which takes your exam fee and books your appointment. You need to do both, and the order matters less than keeping both moving.
Step by step
Pick the state or territory where you want your first license and read its requirements, fees and processing times.
Submit the application, supporting documents and fee, including any background check or fingerprinting your board requires.
Create an account on Pearson VUE's NCLEX site, choose the RN or PN exam, and pay the $200 fee.
Make sure your school sends the transcript or confirmation of graduation your board needs. Boards vary on what and when.
When the board confirms you are eligible, Pearson VUE sends an Authorization to Test with a validity window.
Book an appointment inside the ATT window and sit the exam.

Tips that avoid delays
- Use the same legal name everywhere. Your name on the board application, the Pearson VUE registration and your ID must match.
- Start early. Boards can take time, and you cannot book without the ATT.
- Watch your ATT window. If it expires you must register and pay again.
- Read your board’s page, not a generic guide. Rules differ by state.
Common questions
How long does the board take to approve me?
Boards differ, and we do not have a single figure. Check your board’s website for current processing times, and apply as soon as you are allowed.
What if I was educated outside the US?
Boards have their own rules for applicants educated outside the United States, including credential review. Check your target board’s international applicant page before you pay for the exam.
