The path for a new graduate

1
Apply to LARA

Submit the RN by examination application online through MiPLUS with the fee, paid by credit or debit card.

2
Complete the fingerprint background check

LARA sends fingerprint instructions and identification numbers after it receives your application and fee. A fingerprint report and criminal background check are required, and the fingerprint service has its own fee.

3
Register with Pearson VUE

Michigan's guide says to register for the NCLEX after you have submitted your application. Pearson VUE then notifies LARA of your registration.

4
Receive your ATT

LARA tells Pearson VUE when your application is complete, and Pearson VUE sends your ATT with instructions.

5
Sit the exam

You have 90 days from receipt of the ATT to take the NCLEX. Scores usually reach LARA within a month, and your license is issued once LARA has everything.

Education rules

LARA’s guide says you must have completed a registered nurse program within three years of graduation that is either approved by the Michigan Board of Nursing, accredited in Canada by CASN, or accredited in another state by ACEN, CNEA or CCNE. Michigan accepts ADN graduates from approved programs.

Common questions

Is Michigan a compact state?

Reports say Michigan has not been a functioning Nurse Licensure Compact member, so nurses practicing in Michigan need a Michigan license. Confirm current status with LARA.

How long does my application stay valid?

Michigan’s guide says the application is valid for two years, and that the ATT window is 90 days, so check your timeline before you register.
