NCLEX in Kansas: a new set of fingerprints for every multistate application
Kansas wants both the Pearson VUE registration and its own application and fee submitted together before it approves you to test. The Board’s checklist adds a rule that catches people out: every multistate application needs a new set of fingerprints, while for single-state licensure your fingerprints are good for six months.
Last checked October 2026. Based on the Kansas State Board of Nursing’s initial application checklist and instructions, with fees from third-party summaries. Reported fees differ between sources, so confirm them in the Board’s portal.
The path for a new graduate
The Board's instructions say both the NCLEX registration and fee and the Kansas application and fee must be submitted. Use the same name for both.
Start the application in the Board's licensing portal and pay the fee. The Board cannot issue refunds, and says to wait 7 to 10 business days before checking status.
A criminal background check is required before a license is issued. Submit a fingerprint card and the background check fee, and a waiver form where the Board asks for it.
Once approved, you can sit for the exam. A guide says the fingerprint check takes about a month.
Multistate license rules
- A Kansas driver’s license. The Board’s checklist says proof of one is required for any multistate application.
- The uniform licensure requirements. You must meet all eleven to qualify for a multistate license.
- New fingerprints each time. A multistate application needs a new mandatory set of fingerprints, unlike single-state licensure.
Common questions
What if I fail or my application expires?
The checklist asks whether you have submitted another application to the Board if you are taking the NCLEX again. Once an application expires, you file a new application with a new fee.
Why do the fees differ between sources?
Third-party summaries put the single-state fee at $100 and the multistate fee at $125, higher than the Board’s older instructions. Check the portal before paying.
