UWorld vs Khan Academy AP: learning or practicing?
The two do different jobs. Khan Academy is closer to a free course: lessons and practice that follow College Board’s course descriptions, useful while you’re still learning the material during the year. UWorld is a question bank: large sets of exam-style questions with detailed explanations of each answer, most useful once you know the content and want to drill it before the May exams.
What it costs
Khan Academy is free. UWorld starts at $99 for 30 days for one subject, with longer access costing more and 20% off if you bundle subjects. Because access is time-limited, buy UWorld for the weeks before your exam rather than months early. The 7-day free trial lets you check the question style first. AP exam fees to College Board are separate; see our AP cost and format page.
Check your subject first
UWorld covers 15 AP subjects, not all of them. If your subject isn’t on its list, UWorld isn’t an option, and Khan Academy, a book, or an all-subject subscription like Fiveable becomes the comparison instead. Our best AP prep page lists the alternatives.
Using both together
A low-cost plan: learn with Khan Academy through the year, then buy 30 days of UWorld for the subject you most need to drill in the run-up to the exam.
Mistakes to avoid
- Starting UWorld too early. Thirty days of access goes quickly; time it for exam season.
- Assuming every subject is covered. UWorld sells 15.
- Ignoring free-response practice. Multiple-choice drilling alone won’t prepare you for the written section.
Choose UWorld if
- Your subject is one of its 15 and you want a large bank of exam-style questions with detailed explanations.
Choose Khan Academy if
- You want free, College Board-aligned learning through the year.
