Step 1 pass/fail and the 2026 block layout, explained
Step 1 has been reported pass/fail since January 2022, so Step 2 CK’s numerical score now carries more weight with residency programs. In May 2026 USMLE moved Step 1 and Step 2 CK to new software with 30-minute blocks; the content, number of questions and exam length did not change.
Block changes from USMLE’s own announcement; scoring details as reported. Checked October 11, 2026.
The 2026 block layout
| Step 1 (from May 14, 2026) | Step 2 CK (from May 7, 2026) | |

| Questions per block | 20 (was 40) | 18-20 (was 38-40) |

What it means for you
- Practice in 20-question, 30-minute blocks if you test after the change; the time per question (about 90 seconds) is unchanged.
- Try USMLE’s new testing experience tools and tutorials on usmle.org before test day.
- Step 1 pass/fail: a pass shows no score, but a fail appears on your transcript, so a first-time pass still matters.
- Step 2 CK matters more: its passing standard rose to 218 in July 2025, and programs use the score to compare applicants.
