The USMLE, explained
The USMLE is the three-step exam sequence for US medical licensure, sponsored by the FSMB and NBME. Step 1 is pass/fail; Step 2 CK and Step 3 are scored. Since May 2026, Step 1 and Step 2 CK use 30-minute blocks on new software. Step 1 and Step 2 CK each cost $695 in 2026 for US/Canadian school students.
Fees from NBME, block changes from usmle.org; pass rates and passing standards as reported. Checked October 11, 2026.
