Which order should you take the USMLE Steps?
Most US MD students take Step 1 after their preclinical years and Step 2 CK after core clerkships, then Step 3 during residency. USMLE allows Step 1 and Step 2 CK in either order, so some students, especially international graduates, take Step 2 CK first. Step 3 always comes last.
Based on USMLE eligibility rules and common practice, as reported; your school may set its own timing. Checked October 11, 2026.
| Order | Who it suits | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Step 1, then Step 2 CK | Most US MD and DO students | Matches the curriculum: basic science, then clinical years |
| Step 2 CK first | Some IMGs and graduates | Gets the scored exam residency programs weigh most done early |
| Step 3 | Residents | Requires an MD or DO and passes on Step 1 and Step 2 CK |
Things to weigh
- Step 1 is pass/fail, so a solid first-time pass is the goal.
- Step 2 CK’s score matters for residency; time it so you can prepare properly and still meet application timelines.
- Check your school’s rules on when Steps must be passed.
