Securities exam results: when you get them and what the score report shows
Last checked October 17, 2026 · Sources: FINRA’s 2018 SEC filing on test results information (also in the Federal Register); FINRA’s exam restructuring firm call slides; FINRA SIE FAQ and Regulatory Notice 26-18
You get your securities exam results the same day: FINRA candidates receive a test results report at the end of their session. If you pass, the report shows a pass without a numeric score, a policy FINRA introduced on October 1, 2018. If you fail, it shows your total score and how you did in each major section, so you can plan your retake.
What the score report shows
| If you pass | If you fail | |
|---|---|---|
| Result shown | Pass | Fail |
| Numeric score | Not shown | Total score shown |
| Section breakdown | Not shown | Score profile for each major section of the content outline |
| In CRD | Recorded as passed; scores aren’t stored | Failed result and score displayed until you pass |
From FINRA’s 2018 SEC filing and firm call materials, checked October 17, 2026.
FINRA explained in its SEC filing that a passing score reflects the minimum level of knowledge needed, so a higher number doesn’t predict how well someone will do the job. That’s why passing reports stopped showing scores. For failing candidates, the score and section profile matter, because they show how much more study is needed and where.
How results appear in CRD
FINRA records exam results in the Central Registration Depository (CRD). According to FINRA’s restructuring materials, a passing result shows that you passed without a score, and once you pass an exam, your earlier failing results for it no longer display. People who take the SIE without a sponsoring firm can view their SIE result through their FINRA account.

If you didn’t pass
Your failing report shows a score profile for each major section; those are the areas to rework.
FINRA currently requires 30 days after a first or second failure and 180 days after a third within two years. From January 19, 2027, those drop to 15 and 60 days under Regulatory Notice 26-18.
Each retake needs a new enrollment and the full fee: $100 for the SIE, $395 for the Series 7.

After you pass
An SIE pass stays valid for four years, giving you time to find a sponsoring firm for a top-off exam. FINRA says passing the SIE alone doesn’t let you register or do securities business; you also need a representative exam such as the Series 7, and usually a state law exam such as the Series 63 or 66.
