FNP recertification: renewing FNP-C and FNP-BC every five years

Last checked October 18, 2026 · Sources: NPCB FNP Renewal Handbook (June 2026); ANCC APRN faculty toolkit (5-year renewal). ANCC’s CE and fee details are as reported by prep providers citing ANCC; check ANCC’s renewal handbook.

FNP recertification comes every five years on both boards. To renew NPCB’s FNP-C, you need 1,000 practice hours and 100 continuing education hours, including 25 in pharmacology, during your five-year period, or you can pass the exam again. ANCC’s FNP-BC also renews every five years, through continuing education plus practice hours or other professional development, or by exam.

From NPCB’s FNP Renewal Handbook, June 2026. All requirements must be met within the current five-year period.

Practice hours can come from direct patient care (including telehealth, volunteer work and faculty clinical supervision), administration, education or research; student clinical hours don’t count. For CE, NPCB accepts advanced life support courses such as ACLS, PALS, NRP and ATLS, but not BLS. Graduate coursework counts at 15 CE hours per semester credit or 10 per quarter credit.

Counting precepting toward CE

NPCB lets you count clinical precepting of advanced practice students (NP, PA, medical, pharmacy or dental) toward non-pharmacology CE: up to 120 precepting hours for up to 25 CE hours, at roughly 1 CE for every 5 hours. Orientation, residency supervision and onboarding don’t qualify.

Renewing ANCC’s FNP-BC

ANCC certifications renew every five years, and ANCC recommends applying up to three months before your expiration date. Prep providers citing ANCC report that FNP-BC renewal needs 75 CE hours, including 25 in pharmacology, plus either practice hours or one of ANCC’s other professional development categories, or you can renew by retaking the exam. Check ANCC’s renewal handbook for the current categories and fees.

Renewal tips

  • Track as you go: NPCB audits renewals and asks you to keep CE, coursework, precepting and practice records for at least two years after renewal.
  • Front-load pharmacology: both boards want 25 pharmacology hours, which are easy to fall short on.
  • Use precepting: it can cover up to 25 of NPCB’s 100 CE hours.
  • Don’t let it lapse: NPCB says an expired certification means you can’t use the credential, and you’ll need to contact it for options.
