FNP exam day and results: Prometric rules, scores and what comes next
Last checked October 18, 2026 · Sources: NPCB FNP Candidate Handbook (June 2026); ANCC scores and retest policy and FNP-BC page. Prometric’s general test-center rules apply; confirm details in your admission email.
On FNP exam day, both boards test at Prometric centers. NPCB’s exam is 150 questions in 3 hours and ANCC’s is 175 in 3.5 hours, and your ID must exactly match the name on your application. NPCB candidates get a preliminary pass or fail on screen as soon as they finish, with official results and certification following after transcripts are verified. ANCC’s failing score reports include diagnostics for each content area.
Before exam day
- Test within your window: NPCB gives 120 days from your authorization to test; missing it means a reset fee, and NPCB allows one reset per application.
- Match your name: NPCB’s handbook says your ID must exactly match the name in your account; fix mismatches before test day.
- Don’t cancel late: NPCB warns that canceling within 24 hours or not showing up may forfeit fees.
- Know your outline: ANCC exams on or after October 30, 2026 use a new content outline; NPCB’s blueprint is unchanged.
On the day
Both exams are computer-based and multiple choice. NPCB’s FNP exam has 150 questions, 135 scored and 15 unscored pretest, in 3 hours; ANCC’s FNP-BC has 175 questions, 150 scored and 25 pretest, in 3.5 hours. Pretest questions aren’t identified, so answer everything. Prometric’s usual rules apply: check in with valid ID, store personal items in a locker, and expect to be monitored.

After you pass
NPCB releases certification once it has your final official transcript showing your degree; it says to order transcripts early. You then apply for state APRN licensure and, if you’ll prescribe, DEA registration. Certification lasts five years on both boards; see our FNP recertification guide.
After a failed attempt
ANCC's diagnostics show which content areas to rework; NPCB's official notification shows your result.
NPCB: reapply after your official score notification (prep providers also cite a 15 CE hour requirement from NPCB's FAQ). ANCC: wait 60 days and apply at least 5 days after testing.
Both boards cap attempts at three a year, so make each one count.
