FNP community: Reddit, Quora and outdated claims to watch
Last checked October 18, 2026 · Community links reviewed on that date. Posts are personal experience, not official guidance. Current facts below are from NPCB’s June 2026 handbook and ANCC’s FNP-BC page.
The FNP community on Reddit, mainly r/nursepractitioner, is where NP students and new NPs discuss which board to choose, which prep they used and how exam day went. It’s useful for ideas, but 2026 brought several changes that older posts miss: the AANPCB now does business as NPCB, NPCB allows three FNP attempts a year, and ANCC’s outline changes on October 30, 2026. Check rules with the boards.

→What these communities are good for
- Choosing a board: why people picked NPCB (FNP-C) or ANCC (FNP-BC), as personal experience.
- Prep experiences with Fitzgerald, APEA, UWorld and others, as one person’s view.
- Exam-day reports: what the 3-hour or 3.5-hour sitting felt like.
Outdated FNP claims you may see, and what’s current
| Claim you may see | What's current |
|---|---|
| Apply to AANPCB | AANPCB now does business as NPCB; same website (aanpcert.org) and NP-C credential |
| You get two attempts a year on the AANP exam | NPCB allows FNP candidates up to three attempts per calendar year |
| You need 500 on a 200-800 scale to pass AANP | NPCB’s June 2026 handbook no longer publishes a scale; it says the passing score is set by standard-setting and isn’t a percentage |
| ANCC’s exam is 29 questions on Assessment | From October 30, 2026, Assessment is 26 and Implementation rises to 50 of 150 scored questions |
| The AANP pass rate is about 73% | That was 2023; 2025 first-time rates were 81% (NPCB, as reported) and 82% (ANCC) |
| Fees are $240 and $295 for everyone | Those are member prices; non-members pay $315 (NPCB) and $395 (ANCC) |

Using communities well
- Check fees, eligibility and retake rules against NPCB or ANCC; the two boards differ.
- Treat prep providers’ pass-rate claims as their own figures.
- Check the date of any post about the ANCC outline, since it changes on October 30, 2026.
- Never share or ask for real exam questions; board rules forbid it.
