How we rank FNP prep
Last checked October 18, 2026 · Sources: NPCB FNP Candidate Handbook; ANCC FNP-BC test content outline; providers’ own pages.
This page explains how we rank FNP prep. We group options by format, review course or question bank, because the right choice depends on whether you need to relearn content or mainly practice, and rate each course out of 5 with one rubric used across the site. We use the boards’ own handbooks and outlines for exam facts and each provider’s own pages for prices. Ratings are editorial, not hands-on tests, and we take no payment for placement.
What we look at
| Factor | Why it matters for the FNP |
|---|---|
| Coverage of both boards | NPCB and ANCC exams differ in length, blueprint and scoring; prep should say which it targets. |
| Alignment with the current outline | ANCC’s FNP-BC outline changes on October 30, 2026, raising Implementation to 50 of 150 scored questions; NPCB’s blueprint weights Assess at 32%. |
| Format | Self-paced course (Fitzgerald), live course (APEA) or question bank (UWorld, Fitzgerald’s QBank). |
| Published price and what’s included | We link every price to the provider’s own page and say where prices only show at checkout. |
| Guarantees and their conditions | Fitzgerald’s Pass Guarantee and APEA’s live-attendance repeat work differently; we spell out the terms. |
| Honest claims | Company pass rates (Fitzgerald 99%+, APEA 99%) are labeled as the companies’ own figures. |
Our criteria. Each review links to the provider pages we used.
How we rate FNP prep
We use the same rubric across every exam on this site. Each course is scored out of 5 in six categories, based on what the provider publishes and the consensus of third-party reviews, and the weighted total is its rating: question bank 25%, practice exams 20%, lectures and materials 15%, platform and mobile 15%, support 10% and value 15%. Ratings are our editorial assessment, not measured results, and each review shows its breakdown. Providers’ own pass-rate claims don’t count toward the score.
| Provider | Rating |
|---|---|
| Fitzgerald | 4.0 / 5 |
| APEA | 3.8 / 5 |
| UWorld | 3.8 / 5 |
Current ratings, October 2026.
A note on sources
FNP prep companies advertise very high pass rates. These are their own figures, not independent ones, so we label them as claims and show the boards’ published first-time pass rates instead (82% for ANCC and 81% for NPCB in 2025). Several FNP providers, including UWorld and Archer, show prices only at checkout; we review those we can describe accurately and say where prices aren’t published. We also check that exam facts come from the boards: for example, NPCB’s June 2026 handbook no longer publishes the 500 passing score many guides still quote.
What we don’t do
- We don’t claim hands-on testing we haven’t done; our ratings are editorial and say so.
- We don’t accept payment for placement, and we don’t currently earn commissions; if that changes, our affiliate disclosure will say so at the top of each page.
- We don’t copy other sites’ ratings or text.
- We don’t quote prices we can’t see on a provider’s own site.
How often we check
Every page shows when we last checked it, with its sources, under the title. We aim to recheck prices every three months and board rules every six, and sooner when a board changes something, as ANCC does with its October 30, 2026 outline and NPCB did with its three-attempt rule.
Common questions about how we rank FNP prep
Do you test the courses yourselves?
No. Our ratings are editorial: we score what providers publish, and the consensus of third-party reviews, against the rubric above, with the boards’ handbooks and outlines guiding what we look for. Each review shows its breakdown.
Do providers pay for their ranking?
No. We don’t currently earn commissions, and no one pays for placement.
Why don't you rank by providers' pass rates?
Because they’re the companies’ own figures. We show the boards’ published rates instead.
