CMA vs CPA: which credential do you need?
They are not substitutes. The CPA is a state license and the gateway to public accounting and audit. The CMA is a global certification for management accounting and corporate finance. The right one depends on where you want to work, not which is harder.

Signing audit opinions and many public accounting roles legally require a CPA license. The CMA cannot substitute.
CPA exam guideThe CMA is built around planning, analysis, cost management and decision-making inside a business, and it is recognized globally.
CMA requirementsMany accountants hold both. The CPA opens doors early in a career; the CMA signals strength as you move into management and finance leadership.

Common questions
Is the CMA easier to get than the CPA?
By most measures, yes: two parts instead of four, a bachelor’s degree instead of 150 credit hours, and lower fees. That does not make it a replacement, because the two lead to different jobs.
Does a CPA exempt me from CMA exams?
No. Each has its own exam. There is overlap in topics, which can make the second one faster to study for.
Can I get the CMA outside the US?
Yes. The CMA is administered globally by IMA, with no state or citizenship requirement.
