Which CIA part should you take first?
The IIA lets you take the three CIA parts in any order, but most candidates start with Part 1 (Internal Audit Fundamentals) because Parts 2 and 3 build on its standards and concepts. Part 1 also has the lowest pass rate (44%), so getting it done first clears the biggest hurdle while your study habits are fresh.
Pass rates from The IIA; ordering advice reflects common practice. Checked October 11, 2026.
| Order | Why |
|---|---|
| Part 1 first (most common) | Foundation for the Standards that Parts 2 and 3 apply |
| Part 2 next | Applies Part 1 to the engagement lifecycle |
| Part 3 last | Covers the internal audit function; highest pass rate (56%) |
| Part 1 waived | IAP holders may have a Part 1 waiver for a limited time, per The IIA |
Timing
- You have three years from program approval to pass all three parts.
- If you fail a part, guides report a wait of at least 30 days before retaking it.
