ABFM study plan: 12 weeks to the family medicine boards
Last checked October 19, 2026 · Sources: ABFM’s one-day exam page (format and blueprint guidance); AAFP’s board exam guide (study tips); provider prices from their own pages. The weekly schedule is our suggestion.
A good ABFM study plan follows ABFM’s exam blueprint, which sets the target share of questions for each content category, and builds the stamina for a 300-question day. Most residents take the exam in the spring of their final year, so the 12-week plan below runs from January to April alongside residency. It’s our suggestion: use your In-Training Exam results to decide where to spend the most time.
A 12-week ABFM study plan (our suggestion)
Download ABFM's blueprint, review your In-Training Exam score report, and list your three weakest content areas. Register before the first deadline to avoid the $100 late fee.
Work through the biggest categories on the blueprint first, mixing a question bank with reading. Aim for a steady daily block of questions.
Cover the rest of the blueprint, including pediatrics, women's health, geriatrics and behavioral health, with targeted question sets.
Concentrate on the weak areas from your ITE and question-bank analytics.
Take at least one timed, 75-question block per day in 95 minutes, and a full-length simulation; then rest before test day. AAFP suggests a few practice exams in the last week or two.
Practice at exam pace
Each section gives you 95 minutes for 75 questions, about 76 seconds per question by our arithmetic. Practice timed 75-question blocks so the pace feels normal, and plan how you’ll split the 100 minutes of pooled break time across the day.
What to study with
AAFP members can start with 1,360 free board-style questions. For a full bank, Rosh Review’s 2,000-question Resident Qbank starts at $279, and UWorld’s ABFM bank is cited at $499 for 90 days. AAFP also recommends reviewing American Family Physician articles and forming a study group. See our best ABFM board prep page.
Tips from AAFP’s guide
- Use your In-Training Exam scores to gauge readiness.
- Read American Family Physician each month, noting the level of evidence.
- Set up a study group with other residents, and faculty if you can.
- Sleep well in the week before the exam, and confirm travel plans.
