The ABFM exam, the American Board of Family Medicine’s Family Medicine Certification Examination, is a one-day, 300-question test you must pass for initial board certification. It runs every April and November at Prometric centers, in four 95-minute sections with 100 minutes of pooled break time. AAFP says it cost most residents $1,300 in 2024. Study strategy and tips

  • Use the blueprint: ABFM’s exam blueprint sets the target share for each content category and is its recommended study guide.
  • Watch your In-Training Exam scores: AAFP says they help gauge board readiness.
  • Practice the stamina: four 95-minute sections make for a long day; plan how you’ll use the 100 minutes of break time.
  • Register early: missing the first deadline adds a $100 late fee.
