How we rank ABFM prep
Last checked October 19, 2026 · Sources: ABFM’s one-day exam and exam pages; providers’ own pages (AAFP, Rosh Review, UWorld).
This page explains how we rank ABFM prep. We group options by what they do best, because family medicine candidates differ: some have AAFP membership or program access already, some want a course, others a question bank, and diplomates may be on the longitudinal assessment. We use ABFM’s own pages for exam facts and providers’ own pages for prices, and rate each course out of 5 with one rubric used across the site. Ratings are editorial, not hands-on tests, and we take no payment for placement.
What we look at
| Factor | Why it matters for the ABFM |
|---|---|
| What you may already have | AAFP members get 1,360 free board-style questions, and many residency programs provide board review. |
| Format | Courses that teach (AAFP) against question banks for practice (Rosh Review, UWorld). |
| Fit with ABFM’s blueprint | ABFM’s blueprint sets the share of questions in each content category; prep should cover it. |
| Longitudinal assessment support | After initial certification, most diplomates choose the quarterly longitudinal assessment; some prep is built for it. |
| Published price and guarantees | We link prices to providers’ own pages, label cited prices, and spell out guarantee terms such as Rosh Review’s. |
| CME | Some products carry AAFP Prescribed credits, useful for certification requirements. |
Our criteria. Each review links to the provider pages we used.
How we rate ABFM prep
We use the same rubric across every exam on this site. Each course is scored out of 5 in six categories, based on what the provider publishes and the consensus of third-party reviews, and the weighted total is its rating: question bank 25%, practice exams 20%, lectures and materials 15%, platform and mobile 15%, support 10% and value 15%. Ratings are our editorial assessment, not measured results, and each review shows its breakdown.
| Provider | Rating |
|---|---|
| Rosh Review | 4.0 / 5 |
| AAFP | 3.9 / 5 |
| UWorld | 3.8 / 5 |

A note on sources
ABFM’s own pages give the exam format, fees and deadlines, so we use them over prep companies’ summaries. Where a figure comes from a third party, such as UWorld’s new-purchase prices or Rosh Review’s certification bank price, we label it as cited. Pass-rate figures vary widely by source, from 86.5% to AAFP’s ‘more than 98%’, so we show each with what it measures rather than picking one.
What we don’t do
- We don’t claim hands-on testing we haven’t done; our ratings are editorial and say so.
- We don’t accept payment for placement, and we don’t currently earn commissions; if that changes, our affiliate disclosure will say so at the top of each page.
- We don’t copy other sites’ ratings or text.
- We don’t quote prices we can’t see on a provider’s own site without labeling them.
How often we check
Every page shows when we last checked it, with its sources, under the title. We recheck prices every three months and ABFM’s dates before each exam window, since spring and fall deadlines move each year.
Common questions about how we rank ABFM prep
Do you test the courses yourselves?
No. Our ratings are editorial: we score what providers publish, and the consensus of third-party reviews, against the rubric above, with ABFM’s official material guiding what we look for. Each review shows its breakdown.
Do providers pay for their ranking?
No. We don’t currently earn commissions, and no one pays for placement.
Why do you start with what I already have?
Because many residents already have AAFP’s free questions or program access, which can make a paid course unnecessary.
