The digital SAT and the optional ACT Science section, explained
Both tests are now shorter. The digital SAT has two sections (Reading and Writing, Math) and adapts to you. The enhanced ACT’s required part is English, math and reading; Science is optional and no longer counts toward your Composite. Most colleges accept either, so pick the one that suits you.
ACT details from ACT’s own pages; SAT details from College Board, as widely reported. Checked October 11, 2026.

Should you take ACT Science?
Only if a college or scholarship you’re applying to asks for it, or if you want to show strength in science. It costs $5 and does not affect your Composite.
Which test should you take?
- Take a free official practice test for each, then compare using the official ACT/SAT concordance.
- Prefer a digital, adaptive test? The SAT is digital only.
- Prefer paper? The ACT still offers it.
