MPJE requirements in Texas

To be licensed as a pharmacist in Texas you need to pass the NAPLEX and the Texas MPJE, complete 1,740 internship hours and apply to the Texas State Board of Pharmacy. One Texas quirk: your first license is issued with a 30-day expiration date, so you renew it almost straight away.

The path for a new graduate

1
Apply to the Texas State Board of Pharmacy

Submit the Texas application and fee through the Board's online licensing system. Your college sends a signed graduation affidavit to the Board.

2
Get fingerprinted

Use the Board's state-approved fingerprint vendor; results go to the Board electronically.

3
Register for the NAPLEX and Texas MPJE with NABP

Register for both exams online at nabp.pharmacy and pay NABP's fees.

4
Pass both exams

Both exams are required for licensure by examination.

5
Certify 1,740 internship hours

Certify your internship hours once you have passed both exams.

6
Renew your initial license

The first license is issued with a 30-day expiration date. Renew it promptly to keep practicing.

Transferring a license from another state

Pharmacists licensed elsewhere transfer through NABP’s licensure transfer process and still need to pass the Texas MPJE. The Board’s reciprocity instructions state a minimum grade of 75 on the Texas jurisprudence exam.

What the Texas MPJE covers

Federal and Texas pharmacy law: the Texas Pharmacy Act and Board rules on licensing, internship, pharmacy classes, controlled substances and practice. The Board publishes a Candidate’s Guide to the Jurisprudence Examination with its competency objectives; use it alongside NABP’s MPJE competency statements.

Common questions

Does Texas use the Uniform MPJE?

No. Texas uses its own state version of the MPJE, not the Uniform MPJE, as of NABP’s list.

Why does my first Texas license expire so quickly?

Texas issues the first license with a 30-day expiration date under Board rule. Renewing it puts you on the regular cycle.
