MPJE and UMPJE: format, scoring and fees
The MPJE is the pharmacy law exam most states require for a pharmacist license: 120 questions in 2.5 hours, 100 of them scored. Since April 2026, NABP also offers a Uniform MPJE (UMPJE), now adopted by 12 jurisdictions. NABP says it isn’t replacing the state-specific MPJE; each board chooses which exam it uses, so check yours first.
UMPJE adoption, state requirements, the $85 eligibility fee and NABP’s position on the MPJE from NABP’s own pages. MPJE and UMPJE exam fees as reported consistently by guides citing NABP; confirm in NABP’s candidate bulletin. Checked October 12, 2026.

From NABP’s UMPJE Participating States page. Dates are when the UMPJE starts and the state MPJE stops.
- All other jurisdictions requiring an NABP law exam still use the state-specific MPJE.
- Their own law exam: Arkansas, California (the CPJE), Nevada and Puerto Rico.
- No jurisprudence exam: Alaska, Idaho, Indiana, Michigan, New Hampshire, Vermont and the Virgin Islands.
- Switching: if you applied for the MPJE but now want the UMPJE, NABP will close your application and refund you in full.
Illinois: IDFPR now also accepts the Illinois Pharmacist Readiness and Orientation Program (ILPRO) instead of the Illinois MPJE, under Public Act 104-0461. See our Illinois guide.
Format and scoring
- Adaptive: both are computer adaptive tests, per NABP and guides.
- 20 pretest items you can’t identify.
- Pass or fail: NABP reports MPJE results as pass or fail, and allows 5 attempts per jurisdiction. Some boards still describe a scaled 75.
- UMPJE content: pharmacy law principles common across participating states plus federal law; some states add a separate state module.
Fees and retakes
- MPJE: $100 application plus $170 exam per jurisdiction, as reported.
- UMPJE: $100 application plus $350 exam, with score transfers to other UMPJE states at $105 each, as reported.
- $85 extra where NABP confirms eligibility: Arizona, Colorado, DC, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Nebraska, North Carolina, Oregon, Rhode Island, Utah and Wisconsin.
- Retakes: guides say you wait at least 30 days, reapply and pay again.
Common questions
Is the MPJE being replaced?
No. NABP says there is no intention of replacing the MPJE with the UMPJE; boards can keep using the state-specific version.
Can I take it before graduating?
From July 1, 2026, NABP is working with boards and PharmD programs in select states to let students take the law exam before graduation. Check whether your state takes part.
