MPJE requirements in Ohio

Ohio gives you a choice of law exam: the Ohio MPJE or the Uniform MPJE (UMPJE). One useful difference is timing: students with an Ohio intern license can take the UMPJE before they graduate, while the Ohio MPJE can only be taken after graduation. You also need the NAPLEX, 1,500 internship hours and a background check.

The path for a new graduate

1
Decide which law exam to take

Choose the Ohio MPJE or the UMPJE. If you hold an Ohio intern license, you can take the UMPJE before graduating; the Ohio MPJE comes after graduation.

2
Apply for your license

Apply through eLicense Ohio and indicate how you'll meet the exam requirement.

3
Background check and education certificate

Complete an Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation check, and have your school send a Certificate of Pharmacy Education.

4
Pass the NAPLEX and law exam

Register with NABP and pass the NAPLEX and your chosen law exam. Ohio takes part in NABP's score transfer program.

Already licensed in another state

Reciprocity applicants apply to the Board and complete the Ohio Pharmacy Law Course. If you haven’t met the Board’s examination requirements, you’ll need to take the Ohio MPJE or the UMPJE.

Common questions

Should I take the Ohio MPJE or the UMPJE?

Either. Ohio accepts both. The UMPJE can be taken before graduation if you hold an Ohio intern license, which can speed up licensure.

What if I studied outside the US?

Ohio’s foreign graduate instructions set a different internship requirement. Check the Board’s foreign graduate document for your route.
