Official insurance licensing links: states, testing companies, NAIC and NIPR

Last checked October 18, 2026 · Links reviewed on that date. We are not affiliated with NIPR, the NAIC, Pearson VUE, PSI or any state department.

Insurance licensing is run by each state’s insurance department, which picks its testing company and sets the rules. These official insurance licensing links cover the national framework (the NAIC), applications (NIPR, used by most states), the five biggest states’ departments and handbooks, and Pearson VUE’s $19.95 practice tests. Your state’s candidate handbook is the official guide to the exam.

How to use these links

  • Start with your state department for license types, hours and fees.
  • Download the candidate handbook from your state’s testing company for the content outline and test-day rules.
  • Apply through NIPR or your state’s system once you pass.
  • Check the NAIC standards if you’re comparing states or planning a nonresident license.

Why official pages matter

Insurance rules change and differ by state. California dropped its 20-hours-per-line requirement on January 1, 2026, Illinois’s application fee and testing rules have changed, and many course-seller guides haven’t caught up. When a rule or fee affects your plans, check it on the pages above. Our how it works by state page explains the differences.
