From the CMT Association’s knowledge domains page, checked October 16, 2026.

The CMT Association lists the kinds of tasks the application domain covers. They include analyzing and interpreting charts for entries and exits using classical charts, patterns and indicators; developing plans to address risk using technical, behavioral and quantitative analysis and leverage; analyzing model output to judge whether it’s suitable to implement; weighting assets and securities using relative strength, trend and momentum; and integrating volatility measures into price forecasting and trade management.

Short answers and timing

Unlike Levels I and II, Level III includes short-answer questions alongside multiple choice, and the 2026 Program Guide includes Level III sample questions to show the style. The CMT Association doesn’t publish suggested study hours for this level. Because it integrates everything from the first two levels and asks you to explain your reasoning, plan at least as much time as you gave Level II, with practice writing concise answers.

After you pass: earning the charter

Passing Level III doesn’t by itself let you use the CMT designation. You also need at least three years of approved professional work experience and approval for Professional Membership, with three sponsors who are members, no more than one from your current firm. See our CMT charter requirements guide.

How to prepare for the last CMT level

  • Work through the Program Guide’s Level III samples to see how short answers are framed.
  • Practice explaining a trade or risk plan in a few clear sentences, the way the exam asks.
  • Revisit Level I and II material, since the exam integrates both.
  • Use the included Optuma access to build and test full analyses, from chart reading to position sizing.
