CFA exam day: what to expect
Each CFA exam is about four and a half hours at a Prometric test center, in two sessions. The big exam-day risks are not academic: a missing passport, the wrong calculator, or poor pacing across two long sessions.
The week before
- Check your ID. You need a valid passport, and the name must match your registration exactly.
- Pack an approved calculator. The Texas Instruments BA II Plus (any version) and the HP 12C are the accepted models. Practice with the one you will use.
- Confirm your appointment and test center, and do a practice journey if the center is somewhere new.
- Sit one full timed mock. Four and a half hours is a stamina test as well as a knowledge test.
On the day
Allow time for check-in, ID verification and security. Late arrivals can lose their appointment, and the fee with it.
Phones, bags and notes go in a locker. You will be given what you need inside the testing room.
Your first session is about two hours and fifteen minutes at Level I, and about two hours and twelve minutes at Levels II and III.
You can take a break between the two sessions. Use it: eat, stretch, and do not go over the first session in your head.
Same length again, and the one where tiredness shows. Level III candidates will mix item sets and essays in each session.
Pacing by level
90 questions in about 135 minutes is roughly 1.5 minutes each. Flag a hard question, move on, and come back.
Eleven vignettes per session in about 132 minutes is roughly 12 minutes each. Read the vignette once, then answer its four questions.
Each session mixes item sets and essay sets at about 12 minutes per set. Do not let one essay take the time of two.
Common questions
Can I take a break during the exam?
Yes, between the two sessions. Check the exact break rules in CFA Institute’s candidate materials and Prometric’s instructions before the day.
What if I am ill on exam day?
Contact CFA Institute and Prometric as early as possible. Rescheduling inside your window has a deadline and a fee, and from the February 2027 cycle there are no paid deferrals to a later window.
Do I get my result at the test center?
No. You find out whether you passed when CFA Institute releases results, usually five to seven weeks later for Levels I and II.
