Teacher certification tests in Texas
Texas runs its own testing program, not Praxis. Most new teachers pass a TExES content exam for their subject and grade band plus the Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities (PPR EC-12) exam. Early childhood, EC-6 and grades 4–8 core and ELAR candidates also pass the Science of Teaching Reading (STR) exam. You get five attempts at any certification test.

The path
Texas certification runs through a state-approved educator preparation program (EPP), traditional or alternative.
Your EPP approves you to register. Many require you to pass a practice exam first.
Register and test through the Texas Educator Certification Examination Program.
Apply through TEA once your program recommends you, and complete fingerprinting.
Common questions
Does Texas use Praxis?
No. Texas uses its own TExES program, delivered by Pearson.
How many times can I retake a TExES exam?
Texas law limits you to five attempts on any certification test, so it’s worth preparing well before each one.
