Teacher certification exams, explained
In the US, teacher certification is set state by state. Many states use ETS’s Praxis tests; 18 run their own testing programs through Pearson, such as California’s CSET and Texas’s certification exams. Each state decides which tests you need and what score passes.
Last checked October 12, 2026. Praxis fees from ETS’s 2026-27 bulletin; state programs from Pearson’s own list.

Do I need the Praxis Core?
Not always. A teaching-profession site says some states let you skip the Praxis Core with a qualifying SAT or ACT score. Check your state and your teacher preparation program.
