Study.com vs Khan Academy for the Praxis

Study.com vs Khan Academy for Praxis prep comes down to which test you’re taking. Both are linked to ETS, the maker of the Praxis. Khan Academy is free and was built with ETS, but it covers only Praxis Core: Reading, Writing and Mathematics. Study.com is ETS’s paid partner at $240 for four months, and it also covers many Praxis Subject Assessments. If you only need Core, start with Khan Academy. If you need a Subject Assessment, Khan Academy can’t help with that test.

Study.com price from ETS’s store; Khan Academy details from its Praxis Core page and college descriptions of the ETS partnership. Checked October 12, 2026. Not hands-on tested.

The deciding question: Core or a Subject Assessment?

The Praxis has two main families. Praxis Core tests basic academic skills in reading, writing and math, and many teacher preparation programs use it for admission. Praxis Subject Assessments test the content and teaching knowledge for the subject and grade you want to teach, such as elementary education or high school biology. Your state decides which tests you need; our tests by state page shows where to check.

Khan Academy only helps with the first family. Study.com helps with both. So if your requirement is a Subject Assessment, this isn’t really a choice between the two: Khan Academy doesn’t cover it, and you’ll need Study.com or another option such as 240 Tutoring.

What you get with Study.com

Study.com is sold through ETS’s own store at $240 for four months of access. It is video-led: short lessons on each content area, a study schedule, a 30-question diagnostic to find weak spots, and a practice test. Because one subscription covers many Praxis tests, it suits candidates who need Core and a Subject Assessment, or more than one Subject Assessment, within the same four months.

What you get with Khan Academy

Khan Academy’s Praxis Core prep is free with a Khan Academy account. You start with a diagnostic, and it builds a personal study plan that focuses on the skills you got wrong. It covers Reading, Writing and Mathematics, the three Core tests. There is no paid tier and no subscription to cancel.

What it costs over time

Khan Academy costs nothing however long you study. Study.com’s $240 buys four months. If you need longer, plan your test dates so your hardest test falls inside your access window. Remember that prep is separate from the exam fees you pay ETS for each test; see our cheapest Praxis prep page for the full picture.

Using both together

You don’t have to choose only one. A common-sense plan is to prepare for Praxis Core with Khan Academy for free, then buy Study.com only for the Subject Assessment you need. That way you pay for four months when you actually need paid content, rather than while you’re still on Core.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Buying prep before checking your state’s requirements. Some candidates don’t need Praxis Core at all, or need a state-specific test instead of the Praxis.
  • Expecting Khan Academy to cover Subject Assessments. It covers Core only.
  • Starting a four-month subscription too early. Begin Study.com when you’re ready to study daily, so the access window isn’t half-used before you start.

Choose Study.com if

  • You need a Subject Assessment, or want one paid course for Core and your subject test.

Choose Khan Academy if

  • You only need Praxis Core and want free, ETS-built prep.

Common questions

How much does Study.com Praxis prep cost?

$240 for four months of access, sold through ETS’s store, as of October 2026.

Is free Khan Academy enough for Praxis Core?

For Praxis Core alone, Khan Academy is free and built with ETS, so it’s a sensible place to start. Add paid prep only if you need more practice or a Subject Assessment.
