How we rank COMLEX prep
Last checked October 21, 2026 · Sources: the NBOME for exam facts; providers’ own pages for prices and features.
This page explains how we rank COMLEX prep. We group options by the situation they suit, mainly whether you’re taking COMLEX alone or the USMLE too, and rate each course out of 5 with one rubric used across the site. We use the NBOME for exam facts and each provider’s own pages for prices and features. Ratings are editorial, not hands-on tests, and we take no payment for placement.
What we look at
- COMLEX-specific content, especially osteopathic principles and practice, which the USMLE doesn’t test.
- Whether it also covers the USMLE, for students taking both.
- Price for the access period you’d actually need.
- Format: question bank, video lectures or library.
- Guarantees, trials and renewal terms.
How we rate COMLEX prep
We use the same rubric across every exam on this site. Each course is scored out of 5 in six categories, based on what the provider publishes and the consensus of third-party reviews, and the weighted total is its rating. Ratings are our editorial assessment, not measured results, and each review shows its breakdown.
| Category | Weight |
|---|---|
| Question bank | 25% |
| Practice exams | 20% |
| Lectures and materials | 15% |
| Platform and mobile | 15% |
| Support | 10% |
| Value for money | 15% |
Our rubric. ‘Practice exams’ means full-length or predictive, exam-like practice.
| Provider | Rating | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| AMBOSS | 4.2 / 5 | A library plus the most COMLEX questions |
| TrueLearn COMBANK | 4.1 / 5 | COMLEX-only practice with a guarantee |
| UWorld | 4.0 / 5 | Students taking Step 1 too |
| Lecturio | 3.7 / 5 | Video learning and OMM content |

A note on sources
Prep companies’ exam descriptions can go out of date. For example, one provider’s COMLEX page still describes Level 1 as 352 questions, though the NBOME reduced it to 320 in May 2026. We take exam facts only from the NBOME, and we label prices we can’t see on a provider’s own page as reported.
What we don’t do
- We don’t claim hands-on testing we haven’t done; our ratings are editorial and say so.
- We don’t accept payment for placement, and we don’t currently earn commissions; if that changes, our affiliate disclosure will say so at the top of each page.
- We don’t copy other sites’ ratings or text.
- We don’t let providers’ own usage or pass-rate claims count toward ratings.
Common questions about how we rank COMLEX prep
Do you test the courses yourselves?
No. Our ratings are editorial: we score what providers publish, and the consensus of third-party reviews, against the rubric above.
Do providers pay for their ranking?
No. We don’t currently earn commissions from COMLEX prep providers, and no one pays for placement.
Why do you weigh COMLEX-specific content?
Because the NBOME tests osteopathic principles and practice that USMLE-focused banks cover only in supplements.
