Official ASVAB sample questions

Start here. The Department of Defense publishes sample questions for every subtest: General Science, Arithmetic Reasoning, Word Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension, Mathematics Knowledge, Electronics Information, Auto Information, Shop Information, Mechanical Comprehension and Assembling Objects. They show the real style of each section, which matters most for the picture-based subtests such as Mechanical Comprehension and Assembling Objects. The same site carries the Fact Sheet with current question counts and time limits, and pages on how the computer version works.

March2Success (also written March 2 Success)

The Department of Defense says the Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness has approved March2Success, an Army-developed online program for basic skills, which applicants may find helpful. According to its own FAQ, March2Success is free with no obligation to the Army, uses the same coursework Peterson’s sells to commercial customers, and starts each unit with a pre-assessment that builds a custom learning path. It also offers multiple practice tests, so you can retry without repeating a test you’ve already taken, and it covers the SAT and ACT as well as the ASVAB.

The Army’s free practice options

GoArmy says applicants can ask for a pre-ASVAB test or download the free U.S. Army ASVAB Challenge app to get familiar with ASVAB topics. Recruiters set up your test and explain scoring, but the Army notes they can’t help you study, so these tools are the official way to practice through the Army.

ASVAB Career Exploration Program (high school)

Many high schools offer the ASVAB through the Career Exploration Program, which the Department of Defense describes as free of charge to participating schools. It pairs the school version of the test with career planning tools for civilian and military careers. The school version leaves out Assembling Objects, and school scores can count for enlistment for two years once verified; scores from School Staff Testing also need a Verification Test first.

Other free help the Department of Defense points to

  • Public libraries: the Department of Defense says service personnel may point applicants to commercial ASVAB guides in bookstores and public libraries. Borrowing a current edition costs nothing.
  • Adult education: basic adult education programs are available through state employment services offices, according to the same guidance.
  • Branch pages: the Air Force ASVAB page has a career slider for minimum scores, and GoArmy explains Army line scores.
  • Our guides: free topic lists and worked examples for every subtest, starting with Arithmetic Reasoning.

Where to focus

  • The four AFQT subtests first: Arithmetic Reasoning, Mathematics Knowledge, Word Knowledge and Paragraph Comprehension decide whether you can enlist.
  • Then the line-score subtests for the jobs you want.
  • Practice not rush-guessing if you’ll take the computer version, where random guesses near the end of a subtest are penalized.

Our ASVAB study plan shows how to fit these resources into 4 or 8 weeks.
