ASVAB community: Reddit, Quora and how to use them safely

Last checked October 14, 2026 · Community links reviewed on that date. Posts are personal experience, not official guidance. Official facts below are from officialasvab.com, the PiCAT page and branch recruiting sites.

On Reddit, people preparing to enlist discuss the ASVAB in r/ASVAB, including study tips, practice scores and AFQT results, and branch-specific questions in r/military. These ASVAB communities are useful for study ideas and moral support, but numbers posted there are often out of date, so confirm minimum scores and rules with official sources and a recruiter.

What ASVAB communities are good for

  • Study ideas: how other people organized their prep, which free resources they used and how they handled weak subtests.
  • Test-day experience: what MEPS felt like, how long the day took and what surprised people.
  • Motivation: seeing others raise their scores after a retest can help if your first attempt fell short.
  • Questions to ask your recruiter: threads often surface things you didn’t know to ask about, such as waivers or job line scores.

Common outdated claims, and what official sources say now

While checking ASVAB pages across the web, we found these figures repeated even though the official sources now say something different. They show up in forums too, so they’re worth knowing.

Using communities well

  • Minimum AFQT scores reported online disagree; confirm the current figure with a recruiter.
  • Treat score stories as one person’s result.
  • Never share or ask for real test questions.
  • Check the date of a post. ASVAB rules and branch minimums change, so an older thread may describe rules that no longer apply.
  • Be wary of anyone selling a guaranteed score or a shortcut. The Department of Defense doesn’t endorse any particular preparation method.

Protect your privacy

Avoid posting personal details such as your full name, your MEPS, your test date or screenshots of score reports. If you want feedback on your scores, share the numbers without anything that identifies you. For anything about your own eligibility, such as medical history or waivers, talk to a recruiter directly rather than asking in public.

Common questions about ASVAB communities

What is the best subreddit for the ASVAB?

r/ASVAB is the main subreddit for ASVAB prep and scores; r/military covers broader enlistment and service questions.

Can I trust ASVAB scores and advice posted on Reddit?

Use them for ideas and experience, not for rules or minimum scores. Confirm numbers with official sources and your recruiter.

Why do people online give different minimum ASVAB scores?

Because each branch sets and updates its own, and older figures keep circulating. Check the branch’s own site.

Where should I start studying instead?

Start with the Department of Defense’s sample questions and the free March2Success program; our free resources page lists more.
